Origin

The Blue Album was released May 10th, 1994.[1] It featured hit singles "Buddy Holly," "Undone (The Sweater Song)," and "Say It Ain't So."

Spread

The cover became one of the more iconic of the 1990s, and exploitable parodies grew popular in the 2010s. Some early examples a cover created by the all-female Weezer cover band Sheezer[2] (shown below, left). On October 22nd, 2012, Tumblr account Sockcovers recreated the cover out of socks, gaining over 1,000 notes.[3]

Parodies were also popular on Weezer's subreddit. Jokes there include a March 25th, 2018, post showing only Matt Sharpe on the cover, gaining over 370 points[5] (shown below, left). On April 18th the same year, user Happybeep posted an Owen Wilson parody, gaining over 100 points[6] (shown below, right).

The cover saw a surge in edits in the summer of 2019 thanks to dozens of posts on iFunny and Instagram. Instagram user eradication_station was an instrumental user in the spread of edits, having posted several starting in May of 2019.[4] One edit, showing YouTuber Toboscus on the cover, gained over 3,600 likes (shown below, left). On iFunny, one of the more popular posts parodying the cover was posted by user Spoon, gaining over 1,300 likes[7] (shown below, right).
