We Should All Know Less About Each Other is a reaction image and catchphrase that stems from a November 1st, 2021, New York Times Op-Ed headline by Michelle Goldberg. The meme is typically used to reply to posts or media that are considered to be "Too Much Information," and was first used on Twitter in late 2021.
On November 1st, 2021, opinion columnist Michelle Goldberg published her article titled "We Should All Know Less About Each Other" in the New York Times Opinion category.[1] On November 14th, 2021, Twitter[4] user @naledimashishi posted the earliest known use of the headline as a reaction image, gathering over 800 likes in two years (seen below).
The image continued to be used as a reaction image for consecutive months, with Twitter[2] user @TheHorrorHottie posting the image on November 18th, 2021, and gathering over 100,000 likes in two years (seen below, left). A screenshot of the post was then reposted to Tumblr by @negativebills,[3] where it gathered over 30,000 notes in two years. On February 9th, 2022, Tumblr[5] user @mysharona1987 used the image in reaction to news about Will Smith having so much sex that it made him vomit, gathering over 400 notes in a year (seen below, right).
In January 2023, the reaction image made a resurgence in light of anecdotes from Prince Harry's Memoir. Twitter[6] user @AshleyySpencer posted the image on January 5th, 2023 (seen below, left), and Twitter[7] user @wengelll posted the image on January 5th, 2023, as well, gathering over 5,000 likes in four months (seen below, right).
