About

We Saw You From Across the Bar and Really Dig Your Vibe refers to a phrasal template that captions an image of a couple, husband and wife or a group of people who are imagined to approach the meme's viewer at a bar, club or another setting due to them really "digging their vibe "and offering them a drink. The catchphrase was coined on Twitter in late 2020 and has since been used in various image caption memes.

Origin

On December 21st, 2020, Twitter[1] user nicegirlmeg captioned an image of Andy Sandberg and Cristin Milioti with, "'Hey my boyfriend saw you from across the bar and we really dig your vibe. Can we buy you a drink?'" The tweet earned an unknown amount of likes due to nicegirlmeg's account getting deleted sometime in 2021 (shown below).

Nicegirlmeg's tweet was reposted to multiple platforms going into the remainder of December as evidence of its virality. For instance, the Instagram[2] account hardcorecomedy2.0 reposted it on December 28th, 2020, and received roughly 97,900 likes in a year and a half.

Spread

Twitter and Instagram users started pairing the catchphrase with other images going into the rest of December 2020. For instance, on December 22nd, 2020, the Instagram[3] account vinylranch posted an iteration that received roughly 3,300 likes in a year and a half (shown below, left). On December 31st, 2020, Twitter[4] user westonallen64 captioned an image of Mario and Princess Peach with the phrase, earning over 770 likes in the same amount of time (shown below, right).

Going into 2021, the phrase started to be remixed en masse, incorporating new settings that the imagined scenario took place in. For instance, on April 14th, 2021, Twitter[5] user quakerraina replaced the word "love" with "hate" in a tweet that earned roughly 14,100 likes in one year (shown below, left). On May 7th, 2021, Twitter[6] user kukukadoo captioned an image of two explorers, ending the phrase with, "can we remind you of the ephemerality of all worldly things?" The tweet earned roughly 3,300 likes in one year (shown below, right).

The phrase received more variations going into 2022. On April 21st, 2022, Twitter[7] user riccmoranis captioned an image of Willem Dafoe with, "my wife and I saw you from across the bar and we really dig your vibe," earning roughly 375,800 likes in four days (shown below).
