We Don't Talk About Bruno is a song from the 2021 Disney film Encanto, which was popularized in late 2021 and early 2022. The song finds the Madrigal family, most of whom have superpowers, singing about their estranged relative Bruno, who had the gift of prophecy and was vilified by the family and townsfolk for it. For many, the song stood out from the rest of the film's soundtrack, inspiring memes and appreciative posts after the movie's release in November 2021.
Origin
"We Don't Talk About Bruno" was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and appears in Encanto, released November 24th, 2021.[1] In the song, the Madrigal family warns the main character, Mirabel, about Bruno, her estranged uncle, who has the gift of prophecy and was vilified by the town before the events of the film. The song was uploaded to YouTube by Disney on December 29th, 2021, where it gained over 62 million views in two weeks (shown below).
Spread
The song proved very popular, hitting #1 in the U.S. Spotify chart[2] and reaching the top 20 globally.[3] Along with its rise in popularity came joking posts appreciating the song. For example, on December 29th, 2021, Twitter user @LexieBadBitch2[4] posted a clip from the song, writing, "Y’all… the way this part of “WE DON’T TALK ABOUT BRUNO” has had me in a chokehold since watching #Encanto babbbyyyyy!!!," gaining over 220 retweets and 980 likes in two weeks (shown below, left). Twitter user @KestinTheVoice[5] posted a joke about waking up and starting to sing the song, gaining over 140 retweets and 610 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
The song also inspired a variety of video memes in existing templates, such as Replacement Remixes and Discord Sings parodies. On December 31st, 2021, YouTuber Graphicc 2 posted a Gets Faster parody of the song, gaining over 60,000 views (shown below, left). On December 19th, YouTuber JudeThePotato posted a Discord Sings parody that gained over 1.7 million views (shown below, right).
