Origin

In the Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith video game, released April 2nd, 2005,[1] a Clone Trooper confronts Obi-wan Kenobi with the sentence "I'm sorry, sir. We are no longer required to follow your orders" (shown below).



The first use of the scene as a reaction image occurred March 9th, 2018, when Redditor Hunter11725 posted it in /r/PrequelMemes.[2]

On December 8th, 2018, a template for the meme was uploaded to /r/MemeTemplatesOfficial[3] by a deleted Reddit user. Scenarios involving students and teachers are commonly used as captions for the image. For example, on January 29th, 2021, Redditor junior-echo-2077 posted such an example to /r/PrequelMemes[4] (shown below, right).



A similar scene from the Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith film, in which a clone trooper says "I'm sorry sir, it's time for you to leave" has seen similar use as the Revenge Of The Sith game meme. On December 12th, 2018, a deleted Reddit user posted such an example to /r/PrequelMemes,[5] gaining over 3,000 points (shown below, left). On November 29th, 2019, another teacher/class example was posted to /r/memes by user 0K13,[6] gaining over 5,400 points (shown below, right).
