About
Water Broke Prank is a viral prank trend in which a pregnant woman spills water on the ground and pretends that it was her water breaking. The trend started to go viral in 2021 on TikTok after some examples of it got a lot of engagement, with either the father of the baby or the parents of the future mother being the ones to have the prank done on them.
Origin
At the end of a pregnancy term, the start of the labor process is usually signaled by an involuntary act colloquially called "the water breaking," which means it's time to immediately rush to a hospital and begin the birthing process. Because of this, faking the water breaking became a way to get a rise out of whoever is responsible for helping with the pregnancy. On October 22nd, 2017, the YouTube[1] user Prettyboyfredo uploaded one of the earliest examples of the prank, titled 'MY WATER BROKE PRANK GONE WRONG!!! HE LEFT ME AT THE HOUSE LMAO' which received over 8.5 million views in six years (shown below).
Spread
On January 19th, 2021, the TikToker[2] collab uploaded one of the earliest versions of the prank on the platform, which received over 350,000 likes in two years for pranking her father (shown below).
The prank trend continued on throughout the years with newer versions being posted every few months, switching the person being pranked on, with neighbors, bosses, extended family and even strangers being at the receiving end of the prank. On May 2nd, 2023, the TikToker[3] Shelbanddyl uploaded her pranking her husband, receiving over 3 million likes and 25 million views in one week (shown below).
