On July 29th, 2024, the Walmart YouTube[1] channel posted an advertisement encouraging viewers to shop at Walmart for back-to-school fashion. The ad begins with a young girl teaching her bus driver that "slay" has been replaced with "ate." The commercial continues to feature Gen Z slang terms, with the girl promising to teach the bus driver what "Ohio" means on the way back home. The commercial then features students dancing and walking a makeshift runway in the school cafeteria while wearing Walmart clothing. The video gained over 480,000 views in just over a month.

The advertisement became the subject of reactions and edits on TikTok throughout August 2024, also becoming the subject of edits and memes on YouTube. The vast majority of reactions and edits frame the video as cringe.

For example, on August 5th, 2024, TikToker[2] @rose_transfem posted an edit highlighting the use of the term "aura points" in the ad, garnering over 384,000 views in a month.

On August 17th, YouTuber[3] Crownxxpoint posted an edit of the ad in which a "cringe counter" has been added, which tallies each instance of cringe in the video, garnering over 268,000 views in two weeks.

On August 23rd, 2024, YouTuber[4] Melanie Martinez Fan posted an edit of the video titled "Walmart Brainrot Ad, but it speeds up every time it's cringe," garnering over 305,000 views in two weeks.
