Walking On Milk Crates Challenge, or simply called Crate Challenge, refers to a viral video and social challenge where participants walk up and down a staircase made of milk crates without falling. The challenge is deceptively hard and people often fall, resulting in viral fail videos. The first video of the challenge went viral in August 2021 on Facebook.
Origin
Running On Milk Crates Precursor Video
On June 23rd, 2011, YouTube channel, JoyRidersTV Bonus Footy, posted a video (shown below) titled, "Guy falls off 6 Milk Crates," depicting a similar stunt to the more recent trend. The video received roughly 37,000 views in one year.
2021 Facebook Videos
On August 1st, 2021, Facebook user Billy Joe posted two videos of people attempting the earliest form of the challenge before it took off as an official internet trend (shown below). The post received roughly 3,000 reactions and 39,000 shares over the course of one week.
On August 13th and 14th, 2021, Facebook[1] users Kenneth Waddell and Jordan Browne posted videos of people playing the crate game in a public park. Waddell posted a live video of the event on August 13th, 2021 (shown below, left). Browne's video of an older man falling (shown below, middle) was posted on August 14th and received roughly 8,800 reactions and 51,000 shares in two days.[2] On August 16th, 2021, Jordan Browne would upload another video to Facebook, this time reposting a TikTok from TikToker @taylorxxlauren.[3] The TikTok when posted to Facebook by Brown received roughly 30,000 reactions and 5.3 million views in one day (shown below, right).[5] The video shows more people attempting and failing the challenge.
Spread
On August 16th, 2021, Twitter user @monclermalc would repost screen-recordings of the Facebook videos (shown below, left) and receive roughly 124,000 likes and 1.4 million views in one day.[4] On August 16th, the video was being memed on Instagram (shown below, right).
From August 20th-23rd, 2021, more people would hop onto the trend across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. More videos of the challenge would go viral, solidifying the hashtag #cratechallenge. Notable videos include prison inmates doing the challenge,[6] rappers like YK Osiris and Boosie Badazz partaking,[7] and Instagrammer @kizzykeri [8] doing the challenge in heels, inspiring multiple edits comparing her to the high-heeled woman stepping into the new year meme.
