The Walking Into Random Houses Trend is a purported TikTok trend in which users film themselves walking into houses owned by random people. Although it was reported as a trend by numerous media outlets in May 2023, there are few known notable videos of TikTokers breaking into random homes, some of which have been accused of being fake, suggesting the trend is not widespread. In May 2023, reports of the trend were sparked by a viral video of a TikTok prankster walking into a random house, which was uploaded and deleted in May 2023, gaining widespread attention online and sparking backlash over the dangers of the supposed trend.

Origin

There are several videos of TikTokers supposedly walking into random people's homes uploaded between 2022 and early 2023, although some appear to be staged. For example, on August 3rd, 2022, TikToker^[4] @robsanofficial posted a video supposedly walking into a random man's house to get them to rate his song, garnering over 663,000 views in nine months, although some commenters have accused it of being fake (shown below, left). On March 7th, 2023, TikToker^[5] @iamryanprice posted a video walking into a supposedly random person's condo, garnering over 363,000 views in two months (shown below, right). Again, there are no confirmations that this video is legitimate.

On or just prior to May 17th, 2023, TikTok prankster @secretmizzy, who also runs the account @weoutsideinthedistricts, posted a video caption "walking into random houses" in which he and a small group of friends enter a random house and walk around until they're kicked out. In the video, they tell the homeowner they're looking for a study group before he asks them to leave. The video and account were deleted sometime later. The video was reuploaded by Twitter^[1] user @CatchUpFeed that day, writing, "'Youths' are just randomly walking into people’s houses for TikTok fame," garnering over 160 likes in two days (shown below).

This is not the first time Mizzy has done this prank. On March 26th, 2023, TikToker^[7] @themenacesociety reposted another of Mizzy's videos where he walks into a random house, sees a family cooking, then runs out, garnering over 58,000 views in two months (shown below).

The video was retweeted by the @dexerto Twitter^[2] account on May 18th, 2023, writing, "There is currently a trend on TikTok where people walk into strangers’ houses," garnering over 4,700 likes in a day. It was also reported on by Daily Mail,^[3] who reported on it as a TikTok trend. The video also inspired reactions on TikTok from users discouraging others from doing the trend, suggesting it's illegal and potentially harmful (examples shown below).

On May 19th, Twitch streamer Hasan Piker retweeted^[6] Dexerto's post, writing, "yah you can't do this in America," garnering over 18,000 likes in under a day.
