Wait I'm Goated is a catchphrase and a series of puns started by the Instagram user @bug2sick in 2023. The phrase uses the slang term "goated," a variation of the acronym G.O.A.T, made notable because of the Quirked Up White Boy Goated With The Sauce meme, among other uses. "Wait I'm Goated" was most often used as a top caption for images of cute animals like cats, hamsters and goats as part of the Soft Irony genre of Hood Irony memes. The phrase also gained usage on TikTok, alongside the launch of the Wait I'm Goated t-shirt, worn by influencers like Diddybop and Henry Kava.

Origin

The inspiration for the later inception of "Wait I'm Goated" was an altered Instagram story screenshot posted by Instagram^[1] user @throwingfits on June 1st, 2023, which read, "idk how to flirt i done called this bitch goated." The post gained roughly 10,300 likes and multiple, cross-platform reposts in two months.

Sometime in June 2023, Instagram user @bug2sick made a backup account called @waitimgoated123, where they started uploading memes that recaptioned and exploited the abovementioned meme.^[2]

@bu2sick's account was removed by Instagram sometime before July 15th, 2023, causing them to pivot full-time to their backup @waitimgoated123. Although all of the account's first memes using the "Wait I'm Goated" catchphrase have since been archived by the account, the admin posted a series of "Wait I'm Goated" memes in a photo slideshow on their TikTok^[3] account @bug2sick on July 15th, gaining roughly 2,500 plays and 350 likes in three weeks.

Also on July 15th, 2023, Instagram^[4] user @slayworldalbania posted a slideshow of "Wait I'm Goated" memes that played with puns, gaining roughly 9,100 likes in three weeks.

Starting on July 19th, 2023, Instagram^[5] user @waitimgoated123 started to post photos of people wearing t-shirts with "wait im goated" written on them. Soon after, on July 19th, the page posted to Instagram^[6] a photo of influencer Henry Kava wearing the shirt, gaining roughly 5,800 likes in 15 days.

On July 22nd, 2023, Twitter^[7] user @ShootaCat started a thread of "Wait I'm Goated" memes featuring a cat, with the primary tweet gaining roughly 48,900 likes in 12 days. On July 22nd, 2023, TikToker^[7] @ripdiddybop posted a video wearing a Wait I'm Goated shirt, gaining roughly 1.4 million plays and 189,100 likes in 12 days.
