Wait a Minute I Hate Golf is a reaction image and series of image macro memes based on a scene from SpongeBob SquarePants in which Mr. Krabs, on a golf course, exclaims, "Wait a minute, I hate golf." The scene comes from a 2005 episode of the series and first became the subject of memes in 2019, becoming increasingly popular throughout the 2020s.

Origin

On September 23rd, 2005, season four episode 65a of SpongeBob SquarePants aired, titled, "Selling Out." In the episode, Mr. Krabs sells the Krusty Krab to a wealthy man and retires. Mr. Krabs tries a variety of hobbies but ultimately realizes he's bored, including golf. In the scene, he plays most of a hole of golf then exclaims, "Wait a minute, I hate golf" (shown below).

On May 11th, 2019, u/JustALoser- posted an image macro to /r/dankmemes^[1] using the image of Krabs playing golf, garnering over 30 upvotes in five years (shown below). This is the earliest known meme to use the image.

Spread

The meme became increasingly popular over the following years, with the word "golf" sometimes changed to another word. On August 2nd, 2021, u/versaxeflakes posted a version of the meme to /r/LeagueOfMemes,^[2] garnering over 3,200 upvotes in three years (shown below, left). On November 29th, 2022, a meme using the format was posted to /r/NintendoSwitchSports^[3] about an update to the game Nintendo Switch Sports, garnering over 300 upvotes in two years (shown below, right).

On April 18th, 2024, X^[4] user @JonComms posted a version of the meme with the word "golf" replaced by "virtual buttons" in response to the Apple Store allowing emulators, writing, "iPhone users when the Mario 64 intro finishes and they get control of Mario," garnering over 17,000 likes in under a day (shown below).
