Visible Happiness refers to a prequel meme depicting an image of Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Ewan McGregor, smiling from Star Wars: Attack of the Clones subtitled, "[Visible Happiness]." The image became popularized on /r/prequelmemes around 2019 in image macros. It is also a prevalent reaction image to reply to something that makes one happy. The meme is inspired by another descriptive noise meme, Visible Confusion, featuring another image of Obi-Wan from the prequel movies.

Origin

On March 26th, 2016, Tumblr[1] user radiantvii posted an image of Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars: Attack of the Clones smiling, writing, "This is the warmest picture I have ever seen in my entire life." The post gained over 5,900 notes in six years. On December 19th, 2018, Redditor Shitsekk posted a meme to /r/prequelmemes[2] using the image, gaining over 48,700 upvotes in four years. The earliest known meme using a version of the image with the subtitle "[visible happiness]," was posted to /r/PrequelMemes[4] on February 10th, 2019, in a post gaining over 38,000 upvotes (shown below).

Spread

The image became notably popular on /r/PrequelMemes throughout 2019. It also gained popularity as a reaction image. On April 11th, 2019, Twitter[3] user @LogicPlague commented on an @XboxGamePass announcement tweet using the image as a reaction. On December 19th, a now-deleted Redditor posted to /r/prequelmemes[5] "When you realize the person who directed the two best Mandalorian episodes is also directing the entire Kenobi series," along with the image, gaining over 53,000 upvotes in two years (shown below).

On December 11th, 2020, Redditor YeeOlGoat posted a meme to /r/memes[6] using the image joking about Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You," gaining over 92,000 upvotes in a year (shown below). The meme has been reposted many times to notable success, including by Instagram[7] page Jokezar the next day, gaining over 95,000 likes in the same span of time.

Visible Confusion refers to an image from the 2002 film Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones depicting Obi-Wan Kenobi with a confused expression. Online, the image has been used as a reaction image expressing bewilderment, most commonly paired with the titular caption in vein of Descriptive Noise.
