Vince Carter Crying and Cheering refers to a viral video of NBA superstar Vince Carter crying and cheering at his jersey retirement ceremony in Toronto. The clip spread widely on social media and was used as a video and GIF caption meme in which it was posted with captions in which one might emotionally celebrate.
Origin
On November 2nd, 2024, the NBA's Toronto Raptors retired Vince Carter's jersey number. A retired basketball star and long-time Raptor, Carter was visibly emotional during the ceremony. He took in the cheers of the crowd, shaking his hands and crying out in joy. That day, the YouTube channel House of Highlights posted the full clip of Carter's jersey retirement. The key moment takes place at roughly the 1:05 mark.
Social media users recognized the potential of the clip as a meme that evening. Later on November 2nd, Twitter / X user @notbpod[1] posted the clip alongside the I Got One More In Me meme and a clip of Carter saying, "It's over," writing, "New Vince Carter meme dropped," gaining over 30 retweets and 490 likes in five days.
Spread
Over the following week, the clip saw prevalent use as a reaction clip in caption memes. It was the most popularly used clip in the "When Young Thug Gets Into His Introspective Bag" meme, first posted on November 3rd, 2024, and gaining over 3 million views and 2,800 likes in three days.
Also on November 3rd, Twitter user @SixthManJake[2] posted the clip writing, "I genuinely think Vince Carter gave us the meme of the decade bro…," gaining over 2,700 retweets and 60,000 likes in three days.
