About
Unhinged Home Design refers to a series of satirical animated videos on interior design primarily created by the TikTok accounts @designer_bob, @homedesign369 and @dy02449xjp. In the videos, small rooms are remodeled to maximize space efficiency and house a multitude of appliances, with the videos featuring multiple comedy elements such as jokes in narration, purposefully weird animations and running gags about "galvanized steel," "environmentally friendly wood veneers" and "borrowing from an aunt."
Origin
On April 22nd, 2022, TikTok[1][2] account @designer_bob started posting interior design videos. The initial videos posted by the account were practical home design 3D animations with no humorous elements. On November 19th, 2023, and January 2nd, 2024, similar TikTok[3][4][5][6] accounts @homedesign369 and @dy02449xjp became active.
While @designer_bob mostly continued to post serious videos about redesigning small spaces with limited humorous elements, the content posted by @homedesign369 and @dy02449xjp incorporated humorous commentary, bizarre animations and other comedy elements, such as people kicking the old furniture to break it and a tiger being a pet.
On December 4th and 7th, 2023, @homedesign369[7][8] posted the earliest videos on the channel to incorporate humorous elements, with the videos on the design of kids' bedrooms garnering over 454,000 views and 4 million views, respectively, in five months (shown below, left and right).
Spread
In the following months, the channel's content became increasingly satirical. For example, on December 17th, 2023, the channel posted a design video that received over 19.2 million views on TikTok[9] in five months (shown below, left). On January 1st, 2024, the channel posted a video that garnered over 2.2 million views on TikTok[10] in four months (shown below, right).
Some running gags shared by the accounts, which are suspected to be produced by the same animation farm, include frequent usage of galvanized square steel and environmentally friendly wood veneers, borrowing various construction elements from an aunt, parents "accidentally" having dozens of children and people fighting furniture and each other.
Multiple videos shared by the channels were reposted and went viral on other social media platforms. For example, on April 24th, 2024, X[11] user @nick_____t reposted a video by @homedesign369, with the upload gaining over 400 reposts and 2,600 likes in ten days (shown below).
