Unexpected Edits, also known as Unexpected Football Edits, refers to a series of soccer players' fan edit videos posted on TikTok that starts with random videos that either produce a jumpscare or humorous effect when it transitions to players' fancams. The trend started in September 2024 but gained significant traction in early November 2024 as TikTokers created more memetic content related to the unexpected edits, which is also accompanied by Brazilian funk soundbites.
Origin
On September 19th, 2024, TikTok[1] user @futtmaster_ posted a clip from the 2015 Landmine Goes Click horror movie which, at some point, unexpectedly transitions to a fan edit of Antony Matheus dos Santos, a Brazilian footballer playing for Manchester United. The video (seen below) amassed over 3 million plays and 341,000 likes in two months.
Spread
Unexpected football edits gained more traction over the following months on TikTok, often combining funny videos with famous footballers' fancams.
For example, on October 24th, 2024, TikTok[2] user @memelordfyp posted an unexpected edit of the Brazilian footballer Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior (seen below), which amassed more than 17 million plays and 2 million likes in a month.
On November 12th, 2024, TikTok[3] user @wizzard.w uploaded a "Top 8 Unexpected Edits" video (seen below), which garnered over 889,000 likes in two days.
