Origin

On May 19th, 2019, HBO aired the series finale of the American fantasy television series Game of Thrones entitled "The Iron Thrones". In the episode, the remaining nobles of Westeros meet to choose a new king for the seven kingdoms. When no one steps forward, Lord Edmure Tully (portrayed by Tobias Menzies) nominates himself and begins to monologue about his qualifications. Tully's niece Sansa Stark (portrayed by Sophie Turner) interrupts him and says, "Uncle, please sit" (clip below).

Shortly after the episode premiered, fans shared their appreciation of the line and joked about its use in common speech. Twitter [1] user @briamicheIIe tweeted an image of Sansa with the caption "I support Men's Right, men's right to shut the fuck up." They wrote of the image, "uncle please sit." The post received more than 50,000 retweets and 100,000 likes in one week (shown below, left).

Over the next few hours, others used the line as a caption for various images, mock conversations and videos to express the humor they found in the line (examples below, center and right).
