About
Umber Boy, or Lord Ned Umber, refers to a minor character of fantasy TV series Game of Thrones. In April 2019, following the release of the first episode of season eight of the series, a jumpscare scene featuring the character gained popularity online as a reference.
Origin
On July 16th, 2017, episode one "Dragonstone" of season seven of HBO-produced fantasy series Game of Thrones premiered. In the episode, character Ned Umber, a young boy and the current lord of House Umber, portrayed by Harry Grasby, is introduced.[1]
On April 14th, 2019, episode one "Winterfell" of season eight of Game of Thrones series premiered.[2] In the episode, the Ned Umber's dead body, surrounded by a vortex of severed limbs, is discovered by a group of other characters. Immediately following the discovery, the boy reanimates as a wight and screams at the group in a jumpscare fashion.
Spread
Following the premiere of the episode, multiple posts referencing the scene were posted online, primarily on Twitter and in /r/freefolk subreddit. For example, a post made by Redditor Kamilokk on April 14th, 2019, gained over 12,200 upvotes in 24 hours.[3] Another post, made by Twitter user @breakinggods, received over 420 retweets and 1,830 likes in the same period (shown below).[4]
