The inquiry produced a panel with the company's share price as of the stock market closing time on June 28th, which was at 69.69 USD; a double "sex number."

Origin

On Friday, June 28th, 4 p.m., the NASDAQ stock market closed for the weekend. At the time of the closing, the Chinese social network YY,^[1] had their shares priced at 69.69 USD, which remained their share price evaluation until the market opening time at 9:30 am on Monday, July 1st, 2019.

During that period, searching "YY" in Google produced a NASDAQ stock market panel showing the 69.69 stock price.

Spread

On June 29th, 2019, Redditor Alopez2897 made a text post titled "Type yy into google."^[2] in /r/wallstreetbets subreddit (shown below). The post received over 47,900 upvotes in three days. In the comments to this and other posts, multiple users replied "Nice" as a common response indicating that the reference has been recognized.

On June 30th, multiple posts notifying people of the joke were posted online on Twitter, Reddit and Instagram, including notable posts by @g0ulaarte,^[3] GrandmasterBow^[4] and Grandayy. ^[5]
