Twin Can I Borrow A Dollar is a an exploitable meme format based on a screenshot of a string of unanswered text messages from an unknown person reading, "Ppl would die to be us," "Yet we wanna die for bein us," "How that work twin," "twin can i borrow a dollar," "twin." The original image was posted by X / Twitter user @adderallchic_ on December 11th, 2024, and garnered viral spread over the following months as a Photoshop meme in which characters are edited into the image to represent the texts and the recipient of the texts.
Origin
On December 11th, 2024, X[1] user @adderallchic_ posted a screenshot of five unanswered text messages from an unknown person. The messages read, "Ppl would die to be us," "Yet we wanna die for bein us," "How that work twin," "twin can I borrow a dollar," "twin." The post gained over 256,000 likes and 9,000 reposts in six months.
That day, X[2] user @ posted an edit of the meme attaching Ensemble Stars! characters to each side of the texting screen, garnering over 1,100 likes in six months. This is one of the earliest examples of the image being used as a meme.
Spread
The meme continued to spread over the following months, usually as a Photoshop format, in which characters are attached to each side of the conversation.
For example, on December 14th, 2024, X[3] user @PeachiieKeen posted a version using Persona 5 characters, garnering over 2,500 likes in six months.
On December 18th, Redditor u/Average__Cabbage posted a similar meme to the /r/OkbuddyPersona[4] subreddit, garnering over 1,700 upvotes in six months.
On March 3rd, 2025, X[5] user @drakenrotzi posted a version of the meme referencing the video game Elden Ring, garnering over 4,500 likes in three months.
On May 19th, the Instagram[6] meme page emotionalclub reposted the original version of the meme, garnering over 924,000 likes in a month.
On June 2nd, 2025, iFunny[7] user HakkiTheDeaf posted a version of the meme attaching characters from the video game Night In the Woods to the conversation, garnering over 2,300 smiles in a week.
