TruthGPT

About

TruthGPT is a hypothetical large-language model chatbot proposed by tech investor Elon Musk. Musk announced his plans to make "TruthGPT" after criticizing the supposed "woke" tilt of AI chatbots like ChatGPT. In May 2023, Twitter users began sharing screenshots of conversations they had with a chatbot named TruthGPTone, although its connection to Musk remains unclear and unconfirmed.

Origin

Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI, the company responsible for ChatGPT, in 2015, but stepped down from the company's board in 2018. On February 17th, 2023, Elon Musk tweeted that "what we need is TruthGPT."^[1] The statement came as a criticism of ChatGPT's censorship of certain controversial questions.

On April 17th, 2023, Elon Musk went on Tucker Carlson's show to announce his plans to create TruthGPT as a means of trying to understand the nature of the universe. Twitter^[2] user @SawyerMerritt posted a clip of the interview, gathering over 3 million views in a month (seen below).

Various attempts at creating such an AI named TruthGPT have appeared in consecutive months. Twitter account @TruthGPTToken was launched on February 17th, 2023, to promote a Telegram channel and crypto token by the same name. The company also shared the following statement about its vision on Telegram:^[3]

“To build the vision that Elon Musk has; an AI Chat Bot that is programmed to spread the honest truth of whatever it may be asked. Development has already been initiated, and soon TRUTH will not only be a powerful meme coin but a beacon of honesty and truth for the entire world to access.”

Twitter account @TruthGPT_ posted its first tweet on February 17th, 2023 as well. The post simply read "#TruthGPT." The account went on to post interview clips of Elon discussing his plans to build TruthGPT, as well as an image of Elon facing off with what appears to be a robot on April 18th (seen below).^[4]

On February 19th, 2023, Twitter account @TruthGPTone^[10] announced their version of the TruthGPT chatbot (seen below, left).^[5] On April 23rd, the account posted the clip^[6] of Musk's appearance on Tucker Carlson's show with the caption, "Here's @elonmusk announcing TruthGPT… / The only problem is: It already exists. / Link in bio 👀"

In May 2023, various users of the aforementioned "TruthGPTone" chatbot posted their interactions with it. On May 11th, 2023, Twitter^[7] user @zoebroog posted a tweet that read, "What the fuck is Elon's AI doing man LMAO," gathering over 7,000 likes in a day (seen below).

On May 11th, Twitter^[8] user @eglizzabeth posted an image of their interaction with the TruthGPT chatbot, gathering over 2,500 likes in a day (seen below, left). Also on May 11th, Twitter^[9] user @greenTetra_ posted an interaction with the chatbot, gathering over 1,500 likes in a day (seen below, right).
