Trump Supporters Wearing Diapers and Real Men Wear Diapers refer to a political phenomenon of Donald Trump and MAGA supporters championing the former President wearing adult diapers at Trump 2024 rallies and protests, using the catchphrase "Real Men Wear Diapers," which appears on T-shirts, banners and flags. Another prevalent slogan was "Diapers Over Dems." Some MAGA supporters even wore adult diapers with Trump's face on them at the rallies. The phenomenon was widely documented in mid-2024, following a viral post from the blog Dispatches From Trumpland that included photographs from a Pennsylvania Trump Rally. The photos and memes spread on Twitter / X in May 2024.

Origin

A rumor that Donald Trump had been wearing diapers since the '90s spread online throughout the 2020s. The rumor centered on first-hand accounts that the Former President purportedly smelled bad and that "all the speed, all the Adderall he does, all the cocaine that he's done for decades…His [bowels] are uncontrollable," alleged Noel Casler, a former staffer on The Apprentice.^[7]

Viral memes and tweets about Trump wearing diapers started in 2017 on Twitter / X^[1][2] after he was elected President. For instance, on February 13th, 2017, X^[1] user @robdelaney posted the first viral tweet about Trump wearing diapers. In 2018, users on X^[3][4] started to tweet "Real men wear diapers" about Trump. However, none of the posts were viral.

Currently, the first known instance of a Trump supporter wearing a diaper as a sign of their political beliefs was shared in a tweet from X^[5] user @RobertKlemko on June 20th, 2020, showing a man reportedly at a "Trump rally" wearing a diaper to make fun of COVID-19 concerns, receiving over 12,000 likes in four years (shown below).

In 2024, Trump supporters began wearing diapers outside of the context of COVID-19. Instead, they championed Donald Trump wearing diapers, which became a symbol of empowerment in the group, evident in the usage of "Real Men Wear Diapers" as a slogan. Currently, the first known documentation of Trump supporters using "Real Men Wear Diapers" merch was shared by X^[6] user @RealSparklemuff on February 21st, 2024 (shown below).

On April 11th, 2024, the blog Dispatches From Trumpland^[8] shared a piece titled, "Trump Supporters Embrace His Diaper Rumor." The writer took photos at a North Carolina Trump rally where people were wearing Trump-themed diapers and merch with "Real Men Wear Diapers" and "Diapers Over Dems" written on them (examples shown below).

On April 22nd, the Facebook^[9] page Conservatives Are Destroying Our Future shared a meme with one of the photos showing two women wearing diapers with the Former President's face on them. In 11 days, the post gained over 630 reactions (shown below).

On April 24th, 2024, Daily Beast^[10] writer Michael Ian Black published a satirical piece called "Trump Diapers Would Be a MAGA Phenomenon" in which he pretended to pitch Trump-themed diapers to the former President. It's unknown if Black knew about the "Real Men Wear Diapers" phenomenon when writing the piece.

Also on April 24th, Dispatches From Trumpland^[11] posted another piece called "More Trump Diapers At Pennsylvania Rally" that included more photos of Trump supporters wearing diapers and diaper-themed merch in Pennsylvania (examples shown below).

Dispatches From Trumpland posted about the piece on X^[12] on April 25th, 2024. On May 2nd, X^[13] user @nancy_annn tweeted a link to the blog post, gaining over 11,000 views and 210 likes in a day.

Soon after, viral posts about the phenomenon using the photos surfaced, like one tweet shared by X^[14] user @joncoopertweets on May 2nd, who said, "It’s a cult," receiving over 40,000 likes in a day (shown below).

Discourse about the phenomenon spread on Reddit when Redditor^[15] GoldenFibonacci shared it to /r/OutOfTheLoop on May 2nd, 2024, gaining over 4,000 upvotes in a day.
