About

Trump Correcting Kim Jong-Un refers to two photographs taken of Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un at their June 30th, 2019 meeting in North Korea. In the first picture, Kim is saying something while Trump looks on, and in the second, Trump says something else. The images began seeing use as object labeling memes in which Trump is obnoxiously correcting Kim in the second picture. In some variations, only the first photo is used, with Kim explaining something others may not care about, similar to the Mike Wazowski Explaining Things meme template.

Origin

On June 30th, 2019, President Trump and Kim Jong-Un met in North Korea to negotiate a nuclear agreement. During the meeting, Kim and Trump addressed reporters, leading to the photos used in the meme template.

Spread

On July 1st, the day after the pictures were taken, object labeling variations of the images were posted to /r/dankmemes. Early examples include a post by user ctnnb[1] called the first picture a new template in a post that gained over 35,000 points (shown below, left). User JayGee416[2] compared it to the "Monsters Inc. format," gaining over 16,000 points (shown below, right).

Shortly after the first picture began spreading as a meme, a variation with the second picture also began spreading, with Trump edited to be a more irritating character correcting Kim. For example, on July 9th, Redditor theslim_shadyreal[3] posted such a variation that gained over 82,000 points (shown below, left). On July 6th, the template was submitted to /r/MemeTemplatesOfficial[4] (shown below, right). On July 10th, the meme was covered by StayHipp.[5]
