About

A Trump Card is an official membership card and piece of fundraising merchandise issued by former President Donald Trump Political Action Committee (PAC) that shows your support for Trump even after his presidency. The cards were first revealed in an August 2021 email to his supporters, offering four design options. Following the email, the discourse surrounding Trump Cards increased as people criticized the design and iconography of the cards as "Nazi-like," resulting in numerous memes and photoshops mocking the idea.

Origin

On August 4th, 2021, Business Insider[1] published an article detailing two emails sent that day to supporters of Donald Trump via his PAC. According to Insider, the emails tell recipients: "The card you select will be carried by Patriots all around the Country. They will be a sign of your dedicated support to our movement to SAVE AMERICA, and I'm putting my full trust in you." The email boasts four different card designs (shown below) to choose from, stating they were going to pick just one, but Trump said, "'These are BEAUTIFUL. We should let the American People decide – they ALWAYS know best!'" The cards have yet to officially launch, but it is assumed they'll be given with contributions. Notably, the card in the bottom left-hand corner features the misspelled word "official" as "offical."

The Trump Cards were reported on by multiple news outlets, including Newsweek,[2] the Independent[3] and the Daily Mail.[4]

Spread

As news of the Trump Cards spread on August 5th, 2021, Twitter users began mocking the idea in posts. Many drew similarities to the cards' designs and Nazi iconography, notably for the use of the eagle on the front. For example, on that day, Twitter[5] user @grantstern posted, "Trump card = Nazi card. PERIOD," gaining over 400 likes and 100 retweets in an hour (shown below).

People soon began photoshopping the cards to mock them further. Twitter[6] user @ProducerDad posted a photoshopped version of the card reading, "OFFICIAL WE LOST! TRUMP CARD" captioned, "Honestly, I think these Official #WeLost Trump Cards aren't a bad idea. It could help with acceptance," gaining over 1,000 likes and 140 retweets in under a day (shown below).

Twitter[7] user @StirShaken posted that day, "Don’t want to carry ‘proof of vaccine’ cards, but now Donald Trump Wants His Supporters to Carry 'Trump Cards,'" highlighting the potential irony in Trump Cards. In response to this tweet, Twitter[8] user @tomiahonen retweeted it with a photoshop of the card implying anyone who gets one is an idiot, gaining over 877 likes and 200 retweets in under a day (shown below).
