Trisha Paytas "Shallow" Cover refers to a video of YouTuber Trisha Paytas performing the Academy Award-winning song "Shallow" from the film A Star Is Born as performed by recording artist and the film's star Lady Gaga. Online, people have used the clip to express their own admiration for the original song and opinion of their own musical abilities.

Origin

On February 22nd, 2019, Paytas uploaded the video "BEST COVER OF 'SHALLOW' EVER! (BETTER THAN LADY GAGA)" in which the YouTuber performs the song in her kitchen. Within a month, the video received more than 2 million views.

Spread

That day, Twitter ^[1] user @Fridamnh posted a snippet from the video as a punchline to a joke about singing the song. The post received more than 290 retweets and 675 likes in less than a month (shown below).

@Fridamnh's snippet, however, became a widely spread version of the video, receiving more than 4.8 million views as of March 13th, 2019. As the clip spread, others began posting variations of the joke while still using the clip as the punchline. For example, Twitter^[2] user @BogantesEduardo posted @Fridamnh's joke with the clip and received more than 33,000 retweets and 92,000 likes in one month (shown below).

Others used snippets from the videos to make jokes about other cultural observations. Twitter^[3] user @hetnonsense, for instance, used a clip to comment on the employees of the chain of beauty and bath products Lush. The post received more than 33,000 retweets, 144,000 likes and 2 million views in one month (shown below).

On February 25th, Twitter^[4] user @spillingswines posted a clip of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper performing "Shallow" at the 2019 Academy Awards, overdubbing the clip with the audio of Paytas singing. The post received more than 41,000 retweets and 141,000 likes in less than three weeks (shown below).

The following day, the website PopBuzz^[5] published a listicle about the clip.
