Triple Gay

Triple Gay refers to an image macro of Cuphead from the Cuphead video game pointing downwards with the caption "The person below triple gay," implying that in a social media feed, the person whose post is below the Cuphead image macro is "triple gay." After spreading on social media, it exploitable edits began appearing primarily on Instagram and Tumblr.

Origin

On October 15th, 2017, Discord user "Rice" sent a picture of Cuphead with the caption "the person below triple gay" to user "grassy" (shown below).^[7]

Spread

Meme Documentation ^[1] cites Instagram as the likely first place where the image appeared. One of the earliest posts to feature the image was posted October 23rd, 2017 by honk.mp3,^[2] though the user acknowledges "#stolen" in the image's tags.

The image began growing more popular after a screenshot of a Discord thread in which the image was posted was posted to Twitter. On November 13th, 2017, Twitter user @ScrubyScrubrton^[3] posted the screenshot, alleging it shut down the chat for a week because nobody wanted to post underneath it. The tweet gained over 6,200 retweets and 11,000 likes (shown below).

This led to the image being spread through Tumblr. On November 14th, user queenwhiskey^[4] posted the image and gained over 15,000 notes. This led to the image growing into an exploitable on the site. The first variation flipped the image to read "The person above triple gay," and was also posted by queenwhiskey^[5] on November 14th. The post gained over 13,000 notes (shown below, left). On the 15th, user acesnerdyart^[6] posted a version that featured Cuphead saying "The person reading this super gay," gaining over 9,500 notes (shown below, right).
