Traptorial

About

Traptorial is a type of makeup tutorial video created by Instagram beauty influencer Chelsie Worthy who used trap music and unique editing which includes faster transitions and animations. Traptorials initially became popular in 2017 and was adopted by other larger beauty influencers in 2019 who failed to credit Chelsie Worthy as the original creator.

Origin

On November 13th, 2017, Chelsie Worthy, or wrvthy on Instagram, uploaded her first traptorial video using 21 Savage's song "Rap" Saved Me" (shown below). The video gained over 60,000 likes in nearly two years.

Spread

On November 21st, 2017, wvrthy uploaded what she deemed traptorial part 2 which used the song "High End" by Chris Brown (shown below). Worthy captioned the video "you guys showed SO MUCH LOVE I had to make another one." The video included animations and accumulated over 60,900 likes in nearly two years.

Chelsie Worthy also posted new traptorials on Twitter. On December 6th, @wvrthy uploaded a traptorial to Twitter which garnered over 36,100 retweets and 88,200 likes in two years (shown below). Over the next few months, online publications like Bustle^[1] and Popsugar^[2] published articles on her traptorials. In a January 4th, 2018 interview with Popsugar Worthy stated "The regular Instagram videos seem so generic. I wanted to steer as far away from that as possible, so I always include movement in my tutorials."

Patrick Starr and MannyMua

On August 26th, 2019, Worthy reposted popular beauty influencer Patrick Starr's video that features similar editing transitions to Worthy's saying, "Damn this is heartbreaking. I was a Patrick Starr Stan. This is the ugly industry we are in, though. I have NEVER been welcomed or wanted and this fully solidifies that. It’s never “groundbreaking” until “someone else” does it" (shown below). The tweet gained over 26,300 likes and 8,100 retweets in two days.

The next day, Worthy's fans began defending her using the hashtag #WeStandWithWvrthy.^[3] In several Instagram stories, Chelsie Worthy explained why she felt like retweeting the video. She explained that she has always felt ostracized as a beauty influencer of color and is tired of not being credited for her hard work. YouTuber IT'sSHANTi uploaded a video which includes Wvrthy's Instagram stories and comments surrounding the issue (shown below).
