Tortilla Slap Game also known as the Tortilla Slap Challenge or Tortilla Fact or Slap refers to a game where players fill their mouths with water and slap each other across the face with tortillas, attempting to get the other player to laugh or open their mouth and lose the water. The game was first played without water in April 2021 as "tortilla fact or slap," where players, often couples, take turns asking each other questions about themselves. If the player answers the question wrong, they get slapped. The game went viral on TikTok in May 2022.

Origin

On April 17th, 2021, TikToker^[1] @wynnterr18 posted a video playing "fact or slap," a game where one person asks another a question about themselves and if they answer incorrectly gets slapped, with a tortilla (shown below). The video gained over 1.8 million views in a year.

Spread

Tortilla fact or slap spread online over the following months, particularly on TikTok. On April 19th, TikToker^[2] @fettuccine_weenie played the game with another person, gaining over 1.1 million views in a year (shown below, left). On June 3rd, TikToker^[3] @daniela_ro posted a video playing the game with her friend, gaining over 1.2 million views in a similar span of time (shown below, right).

On September 21st, YouTuber^[4] Team Balmert posted a video playing the game with her significant other, gaining over 89,000 views in a year (shown below).

Tortilla Slap Game Silent / Water Variants

Another variation of the game has players slap each other with tortillas repeatedly while trying to remain silent. For example, on May 17th, 2022, TikToker^[5] @realrahsaun posted a video playing the silent variant of the game with two friends, gaining over 4.3 million views in a month (shown below).

That month, TikTokers began playing the same game but with mouthfuls of water, where players slap each other in an attempt to get them to release the water. On May 31st, TikToker^[6] @grace.enlow played the game with her boyfriend, gaining over 7.4 million views in two days (shown below, left). On June 1st, TikToker^[7] @mollysmith19 posted a similar video, gaining over 1.8 million views in a day (shown below, right). On June 2nd, Dexerto^[8] reported on the trend.
