Took My Girl To Her First Rave Yesterday And Said “Welcome To My World” refers to a viral tweet posted by a boyfriend who filmed himself kissing his girlfriend at her first rave or electronic music show. Once posted to Twitter in mid-2019, it received multiple quote retweets and replies from users who felt it was cringe, subsequently creating a phrasal template where creators replaced various words for humorous effect. In 2022, it received increased engagement on Instagram.
Origin
On July 15th, 2019, Twitter[1] user vincenityy posted a wholesome tweet that included a video of him kissing his then-girlfriend at a rave, captioning it, "Took my girl to her first rave yesterday and said 'welcome to my world' and she replied 'our world now' and I will remember this night forever." Over the course of three years, the tweet received roughly 50,100 likes (shown below).
Spread
As the tweet started to go viral in July 2019, Twitter users started reacting to it within the replies, finding it cringeworthy. Many reactions centered on the person taking the video for them, imagining their reaction to taking the video. For instance, on July 15th, 2019, Twitter[2] user radioactium replied with a Feels holding the camera, saying "can i go now guys." The reply earned roughly 10,100 likes in three years.
On July 17th, 2019, Twitter[7] user mrmcdonaldsking posted a quote retweet, recaptioning it, "Please just shut the fuck up," and earning roughly 30,700 likes in three years (shown below, left). Likely inspired by the aforementioned QT, on July 24th, 2019, Twitter[3] user Drew_Simon_ was the first to use the tweet as a phrasal template, replacing words in the phrase to reference the "Late Night Apps" promotion at Applebee's. Over the course of three years, the tweet received over 200 likes (shown below, right).
On July 26th, 2019, Twitter[4] user ericksworldtour used the phrasal template, replacing words to reference DoodleBob from SpongeBob Squarepants and earning roughly 4,300 likes in three years (shown below, left). Also on July 26th, Twitter[5] user TheRealMrTrees used the phrasal template in a tweet that earned roughly 21,600 likes in three years (shown below, right).
Going into the remainder of 2019[6] and into 2020, the phrasal template received more viral usage on Twitter. The meme received mass engagement once more in mid-2022 after quote retweets were posted that resurfaced it. This resurfacing was predominantly inspired by a QT from Twitter[8] realaccountyeah who recaptioned it, "me when I take my future wife to the Costco food court," earning roughly 336,100 likes in three days (shown below).
Many QTs and usage of the phrasal template surfaced going into June 2022.[9] Additionally, reposts surfaced on Instagram.[10]
