Took A Nap refers to a series of TikTok videos set to the song "I Took A Nap" by Gunarolla.^[1] The song snippet used in these videos typically features the lyrics, "I had a lot of things to do today, but you know what I did instead? I took a nap. It was a very good nap." The first half of the videos often feature someone lip-syncing to the song. As Gunarolla sings, "I took a nap" the video cuts to the user napping. This format is frequently applied to animals, showing them active in the first two-thirds of the video, and napping in the last third.

Origin

On April 15th, 2020, musician and influencer Gunnarolla uploaded the official music video for his song "I Took A Nap" to YouTube (shown below). The video starts with Gunnarolla singing along to his song, followed by a cut to him sleeping on the couch. It garnered over 40 thousand views in 5 months. On the same day, he uploaded the video to TikTok,^[2] garnering over 644 thousand views and 121 thousand likes over the same period of time.

On April 19th, 2020, TikToker mushubeans^[3] uploaded a video of their kitten playing around the house, then napping, accompanied by Gunnarolla's original sound (shown below, left). The video garnered over 356 thousand views in 5 months. On April 27th, TikToker kelseycotter3^[4] uploaded a video of her cat drifting to sleep using the same sound and the hashtag #itookanap (shown below, right). The video gained over 669 thousand views and 174 thousand likes in just under 5 months.

Beyond pets, users also frequently act out the trend. On April 29th, TikToker hannahkbrown^[5] uploaded a video captioned, "nap queen" following the format without featuring her pet (shown below, left). This video garnered over 2.1 million views in 5 months. On July 27th, TikToker crystal.g.katsini^[6] uploaded a version of the trend that garnered over 687 thousand views in 2 months (shown below, right).

As of September 29th, videos under the #TookANap hashtag have been viewed over 71 million times. There are over 72 thousand videos attached to Gunnarolla's original sound.
