Tony Soprano Summer is a slang term and parody of hot girl summer where participants act like Tony Soprano from The Sopranos for the summer, doing things like eating pasta, fighting, going to therapy and wearing a robe all the time. The idea of a Tony Soprano Summer was first posted to Twitter in May 2022 and spread over the course of the month.

On May 13th, 2022, Twitter^[1] user @malmxguinness posted, "having a Tony Soprano girl summer where i fight everyone and go to therapy," gaining over 63,000 likes and 11,800 retweets in a month (shown below). This is the earliest known tweet using the phrase.

The idea of a Tony Soprano Summer spread across Twitter over the course of the month. On May 15th, 2022, Twitter^[2] user @TweetATherapist posted, "Instead of a hot girl summer I’m having a Tony Soprano summer where I eat mortadella and pasta, wear my robe all day, and go to therapy," gaining over 7,400 likes and 1,300 retweets in three weeks (shown below). The tweet was screenshotted are reposted to Instagram^[3] page iamthirtyaf on May 19th, gaining over 170,000 likes in a similar span of time.

On May 20th, Twitter^[4] user @sablaah posted, "Instead of a hot girl summer I’m having a Tony Soprano summer where I do crimes and hang out with my buddies," gaining over 1,400 likes in just under three weeks. On May 21st, Twitter^[5] user @gumbydoofus posted, "having a Tony Soprano girl summer where i either die of a heart attack or die from getting shot in the head at a restaurant," gaining over 1,200 likes in a comparable span of time (shown below).
