The Tom Holland and Nicki Minaj Romance is a fan-created ship between actor Tom Holland and rapper Nicki Minaj. The ship first went viral in a series of video featuring the two in a love triangle with YouTuber James Charles in April 2019 and again in July 2020 following the announcement of Nicki Minaj's pregnancy.

Origin

In 2018, the earliest known references to the ship were found on Twitter, where some shared screenshots of since-deleted Instagram accounts, such as @holland_minaj and @hollandxminaj. Twitter^[1] user @oliveiraloucas posted the earliest available reference on March 12th, 2018. The post featured a screenshot from the @holland_minaj Instagram account. The page featured fanfiction about the two having a child (shown below).

Spread

The trend continued over the next year, with social media users commenting on these pieces of fanfiction (examples below, left and center).

Other accounts also continued to publish fanfiction. The Instagram^[2] account @holland.minaj shared a piece of fanfiction on May 20th, 2018 (shown below, right).

On April 17th, 2019, Twitter^[3] user @tomnetherlands posted a video remix of a clip of James Charles crying cut with videos and images of Tom Holland. In the video, Tom Holland threatens to kill James Charles The post received more than 46,000 views, 3,700 likes and 1,000 retweets in less than two years (shown below).

Four days later, on April 21st, 2019, the Twitter user shared a sequel to the video that features Holland telling Minaj that he shot Charles for her. The post received more than 386,000 views, 22,000 likes and 8,200 retweets in less than two years (shown below).

On May 2nd, @tomnetherlands shared a third video that received more than 748,000 views, 36,000 likes and 13,000 retweets in less than two years (shown below).

Following the announcement of Nick Minaj's pregnancy, many fans began posting about the ship. For example, on July 20th, 2020, Twitter^[3] user @BLAKEMENT tweeted several edited photographs of the two together with the caption, "Nicki Minaj has announce she is expecting her first child with husband Tom Holland! Best of luck to the happy couple." The tweet received more than 675 likes and 130 retweets in less than two days (shown below, left). Twitter^[4] user @LeCinphiles tweeted, "BREAKING: Tom Holland departs Spider-Man role following the news of his first child." The tweet received more than 119,000 likes and 18,000 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).
