Origin

On January 22nd, 2019, Redditor[1] KingsSquare posted a photograph of an illuminated toilet bowl superimposed with the text Bonfire Lit from the Dark Souls video game series to /r/shittydarksouls subreddit. The post gained over 470 upvotes in two weeks. On January 25th, Redditor[2] zaphaxx posted an image of a roe deer sticking its head out of a toilet bowl superimposed with a quote from Dark Souls character Kingseeker Frampt. The post gained over 450 upvotes in ten days.



On January 31st, 2019, Twitter[3] user @Jammho posted three photographs of toilet bowls superimposed with names of Dark Souls levels. Each of the photographs contained a certain reference to the level it was meant to represent; for example, the toilet bowl portraying the "New Londo Ruins" level was flooded with water akin to the level in the game. The post gained over 20,000 retweets in one week.

In replies to the thread launched by @Jammho, multiple users posted more imagery of toilet bowls captioned with names of various levels from the Dark Souls series.



The trend was continued in /r/shittydarksouls[4] subreddit, with multiple examples of the meme being posted in the following week.



On February 2nd, 2019, Redditor[5] xxXeliteXxx made a compilation of "Toilet Dark Souls Levels" posts from Reddit and Twitter.

In the coming days, the trend was covered by Russian news outlet Kanobu[6] and Brazilian blog Nerd Maldito[7].
