About
Today Is Friday In California is an exploitable image macro taken from an episode of the live-action Super Sentai series Ninja Sentai Kakuranger. In late 2021 and early 2022, the scene became a source of redraws and fan art, as well as fan videos recreating the scene.
Origin
The scene originated from the 46th episode of the live-action Super Sentai series Ninja Sentai Kakuranger titled "The New Year's Manga Hell."[1] In the episode, the Kakuranger are trapped inside of a manga created by Mujina,[2] a tanuki Yokai. While trapped inside the manga, Saizou is attacked by a motorcycle-riding assassin and is carried away in an ambulance to a hospital. In the hospital's surgery room, Saizou suddenly awakes to more assassins dressed as surgeons wielding giant blades, as well as one dressed as a police officer who says "Today is Friday in California" in English. Saizou responds by saying "Huh!?" before the officer shouts "Shoot!" and fires a revolver. The shots miss their target, and Saizou runs away as the assassin chases after him.
On February 15th, 2021, a clip of the scene was posted to YouTube by Lewis M. The clip (shown below) received over 89,000 views in roughly a year.
Spread
The scene started becoming the subject of memes some months after Lewis M's upload. In September 2021, the gimmick Twitter account @fridaypacific[3] launched. The account is devoted to reposting the scene every Friday and reposting related memes. It has gained over 20,000 followers in six months since its creation. On February 22nd, 2022, the account[4] posted a Matrix meme joking the cop may have been saying "Today is fine day," gaining over 800 retweets and 9,100 likes (shown below, left). On March 11th, Twitter user @primegundam[5] posted a People Who Know meme about the scene, gaining over 600 retweets and 2,900 likes in three days (shown below, right).
In March 2022, re-animations of the scene appeared on YouTube. For example, on March 5th, YouTuber nuttimeister posted an animation of the scene (shown below, left). On March 11th, user Morp also posted a Lego animation of the scene (shown below, right). As of March 14th, no YouTube animation based on the video has seen significant spread.
