About

Toasting, also known as Toastposting, refers to an exploitable 4chan meme that involves posting a picture of a balding man holding a cup of wine in order to give a toast or cheers to someone or something. It is commonly used as a reply with the accompanying words Based or some other affirming words.

Origin

The man in the photo is Tristan Hyde, a British actor and musician, with no relation to Sam Hyde. The image was first uploaded by Tristan[6] himself on March 7th, 2018, as a reply to Owen Jones, in which they were both toasting the British politicians associated with the Britain First policy wave being arrested. After this initial posting, it quickly became a relatively prevalent meme on the /pol, /tv/ and /sp/ boards.[1][2] On May 10th, 2018, Twitter user @prods1taigsnil[3] uploaded the first instance of the photo outside of 4chan, while simply stating "a toast" (shown below).

Spread

Months after the initial posting of Tristan Hyde, the image itself began to get changed and edited through applications like FaceApp or Photoshop, creating different variants of Tristan's toasting. On May 9th, 2020, a female variant of the Tristan Hyde toasting was uploaded to the /pol/ board[4] (shown below).

On April 27th, 2021, Funnyjunk user deadhunter[5] posted an image of Tristan Facemorphed with Greta Thunberg, gaining 20 thumbs in 24 hours (shown below).
