Toad Stacking

About

Toad Stacking is a social game in which participants take live toads and stack them on top of one another. Although, the practice of stacking toads has a pre-internet history, the action of documenting it on the internet began to trend in 2016 when an Australian Youtuber uploaded a toad stacking demonstration.

Origin

On March 30th, 2014, Redditor RIP_BerthaChampagne uploaded the earliest known toad stacking image to r/pics^[1] saying " My friend was able to stack these toads while he was out hunting this morning" (shown below). The post received over 4,500 points (97% upvoted) in five years.

Spread

On September 22nd, 2016, Twitter user @thecowboyhero^[2] tweeted "Toad stacking . Goodnight" with a picture of the toads attached (shown below, left). On October 2nd, 2016, YouTuber swampgarage in Australia uploaded "Toad Stacking Demonstration" which went viral and went on to gather hundred of points on r/Australia.^[3][4] The video gathered over one million views and 10,000 likes in three years (shown below, right).

On July 20th, 2019, Redditor pericleslegal posted a picture to r/herpetology^[5] with the caption, "What species are they? (i stacked them sorry) Its in brazil" (shown below, left). The post gained over 2,200 points (100% upvoted) in a month. On August 28th, Redditor Master1718 posted a since deleted tweet to r/whitepeopletwitter^[6] in which a David Attenborough parody account tweets "Typical, you spend an hour stacking toads and not one of the miserable sods will smile for the camera. Honestly I don't know why I bother" (shown below, right). The post garnered 49,000 points (96% upvoted) in a day.
