"Tis a Silly Place is a memorable quote uttered by the character King Arthur (played by Graham Chapman in the film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Online, people use the quote in videos, reactions and image macros as a punchline to a person, place or thing's behavior.

Origin

On April 27th, 1975, the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail was released in theaters in the United States. In the film, King Arthur and his men approach Camelot with great reverence. The film cuts to a comedic musical number, and when it returns to Arthur, he decides not to enter Camelot and says, "On second thought , let’s not go to Camelot. ‘Tis a silly place" (clip below).[1]

In the 2001 DVD release of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, a remake of the scene was created using Legos. On May 25th, 2006, the clip was uploaded to YouTube. [2] where it received more than 2.6 million views in 11 years.

On December 7th, 2013, an anonymous 4chan [7] user posted a screenshot (shown below from the film ) in the /tg/ messageboard with the caption "On second thought, let's not go to High Rock. Tis' a silly place."

The line is frequently used in a series of image macros found on the website Quick Meme (example below, left) that use a screen-capture from the film.[3] On April 1st, 2014, an anonymous Redditor [4] in the /r/AdviceAnimals subreddit posted a similar image macro with the caption "On Second Thought, Let's Not Go To Reddit 'Tis a Silly Place." The post (shown below, center) received more than 2,400 points (92% upvoted) and 80 comments.

Two years later, Redditor[5] Juventus19 posted a variation that reads "Let's not go to Facebook." The post (shown below, right) received more than 6,300 points (91% upvoted) and 200 comments.


The quote is frequently used as a reaction to different cultural events on websites like Reddit. The like is used to describe carious places in the title of threads. On September 21st, 2016, Redditor[6] cualcrees posted a gif of a cat failing to jump on a counter with the caption "On second thought, let's not jump on the counter. 'Tis a silly place." The post (shown below) received more than 18,000 points (91% upvoted) and 175 comments before archiving.
