Time to Quit / Break Up are a series of TikTok parody videos using the song "New Year's Eve" by Mal Blum which feature a TikTok user packing up belongings that they need to get rid of or quit.
Origin
In 2009, Singer/ Songwriter Mal Blum[1] released their album, For Making Art, featuring the song "New Year's Eve." The song was uploaded to YouTube in 2012 and has received over 690,000 views in seven years (shown below). In late 2018, a clip of the song was uploaded by @420.daddy to TikTok and used in 382,400 videos as of April 2019. The original TikTok video has since been deleted.
Spread
On February 19th, 2019, @alinadimants uploaded a breakup video featuring a montage of her ex (shown below, left). The video gained 751,000 likes in two months. Break up montages led to using the song while packing up relationship momentos, which then led to packing up items that the person no longer wants. On March 4th, @sebatianbails uploaded a video of himself packing up self tanning supplies implying that he was going to quit self-tanning (shown below, right). The video gained 751,000 likes and 19,000 shares in a month.
On March 29th, @Jessy💕 uploaded a video of them putting ferrets in a box implying that they would "quit them." The video gained 483,900 likes in a week (shown below, left). On March 30th, @Maverick Baker posted a video of himself taking off his back brace and storing it away as he jokingly decides to quit scoliosis. The video has gained 1.2 million likes and 14,300 shares in a week (shown below, right).
