Tim Kaine in a Bandana is an image macro series of Virginia Senator Tim Kaine wearing a red and black bandana during a hearing of the Senate Committee for Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. The photograph inspired a series of memes and jokes in May 2020.

Origin

On May 12th, 2020, the Senate Committee for Health, Education, Labor and Pensions held a heard from expert witnesses about the coronavirus response effort in the United States. During the hearing, Tim Kaine could be seen wearing a red and black bandana face covering (clip below).

Spread

That morning, journalist Aaron Rupar tweeted an image of Kaine wearing the bandana. He tweeted, [1] "Tim Kaine is looking fierce." The post received more than 4,100 likes and 580 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, left).

That day, others began sharing the image. BuzzFeed [2] report Ryan Broderick tweeted, "really digging post-apocalyptic Tim Kaine." The tweet received more than 10,000 likes and 1,300 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, center). Twitter[3] user @speechboy71 tweeted, "Tim Kaine once shot a man in Reno just to watch him die." The post received more than 5,000 likes and 900 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).

Several media outlets reported on the meme, including The Daily Dot [4] and PopCulture.com.[5]
