About
The TikTok Hippies Video, also known as Yuppies or the Hippies In a Mansion Video, is a viral video uploaded to TikTok in late 2023 by Polish TikToker @coral_rafa, showing herself and a friend in hippie-like clothing dancing to the reggae song "World A Music" by Ini Kamoze. Going into January 2024, many labeled the video as cringe and criticized the "Hippie duo🌞🌞" for appropriating culture. They were also criticized for recording the TikTok in what was perceived as a mansion, leading to discourse about hippies being "yuppies" (slang for "young urban professional" or "young upwardly mobile professional") historically.
Origin
In May 2023, Polish TikToker[1] @coral_rafa went viral for the first time via a since-deleted video. The video earned numerous duets and stitches after its upload, such as one duet posted by TikToker[2] @ianisuglyy on May 21st, 2023, in which he claimed, "everyone I've met with this aesthetic is always the meanest person ever," gaining over 7 million plays and 1.1 million likes in eight months (shown below).
TikToker[3] @coral_rafa's first still-accessible video was uploaded in June 2023. She went largely viral again with a TikTok[4] uploaded on August 12th, 2023, gaining over 6.6 million plays and 228,000 likes in five months (shown below, left).
In other viral videos posted afterward, @coral_rafa reiterated imagined criticisms about her being a hippie yet living inside a home. For instance, on August 28th, 2023, a TikTok[5] she posted using the Never Back Down Never What sound had text reading, "Me try dont stop beeing a hippie but I have a home," gaining over 503,400 plays and 7,900 likes in five months (shown below, right).
On December 3rd, 2023, TikToker[6] @coral_rafa posted a video that gained over 75 million plays and 5.8 million likes in one month (shown below). In it, she's seen with a friend dancing to and lip dubbing the song "World A Music" by Ini Kamoze.[7]
Spread
After the video was uploaded, users on TikTok started dueting it and stitching it, using the sound[7] of "World A Music" to reference it. For instance, on December 20th, 2023, TikToker[8] @noahsentineo23 posted a duet that read, "Remember, all hippies are yuppies," gaining roughly 7.6 million plays and 489,500 likes in one month (shown below, left).
Reactions continued en masse in late January 2024, evident in a video posted by TikToker[9] @loudestkilljoy on January 23rd, 2024, who enacted what she thought the hippies did after recording the TikTok, gaining over 10.3 million plays and 1.2 million likes in three days (shown below, right).
On January 25th, 2024, TikToker[10] @orlandonuts posted a similar skit about the duo after recording the TikTok, receiving roughly 692,700 plays and 132,300 likes in a day (shown below, left).
Soon after on January 25th, TikToker[11] @coral_rafa posted a duet with @orlandonuts, writing, "My reaction on this information," gaining over 663,400 plays and 21,200 likes in a day (shown below, right).
