The Threads 666 Logo Conspiracy Theory refers to a conspiracy theory based on the logo for Meta's Twitter clone Threads which some thought resembled the number 666, known in the Bible as the "number of the beast" associated with the Antichrist, the Devil and Satan. The theory trended on Twitter soon after the launch of Threads in July 2023. The theory was generally anti-Threads in the Twitter vs. Threads debate.

Origin

On July 6th, 2023, Twitter^[1] user @MrBlackOG tweeted the Threads logo, captioning it, "Hold on!!! IS THIS 666 😳." Over the course of four days, the tweet gained roughly 2,800 likes and is currently the first known post to purport the theory (shown below).

Spread

Soon after @MrBlackOG's tweet, Twitter users with larger followings started to purport the theory. For instance, later on July 6th, 2023, Twitter^[2] user @catturd2 tweeted the logo, writing, "This is the dumbest 666 looking logo in history. Seriously, lol, who’s the dumbass who thought this was a good idea? 😂 it sucks," gaining roughly 25,600 likes in four days (shown below, left). On July 7th, 2023, Twitter^[3] user @KimDotcom posted a similar tweet, gaining roughly 34,800 likes in three days (shown below, right).

The theory gained memes within the replies and quote retweets of the aforementioned posts. For instance, on July 7th, 2023, Twitter^[4] user @TheEmperorSon replied with a meme that used the They Live Sunglasses template, gaining over 950 likes in three days (shown below, left). The theory also gained criticism from users on Twitter, evident in a QRT posted by Twitter^[5] user @JUNlPER on July 6th, 2023, that stated, "zuck and musk are both bad but it’s pretty funny watching the people who made twitter precisely how they wanted it get mad over threads lol," earning roughly 9,100 likes in four days (shown below, right).

Posts about the theory also went viral on Instagram, such as a post shared by Instagram^[6] user @officialbiesloaded on July 6th, 2023, that gained roughly 12,400 likes in four days. The theory was also referenced in viral TikTok ^[7] videos posted in July 2023.
