The line comes from Chicken Run, released June 23rd, 2000, and is said by the villainous character Mr. Tweedy (shown below).

Spread

The image began spreading on the internet in late 2016. On December 19th, 2016, Redditor Billy_Crumpets^[1] uploaded an image to /r/me_irl featuring the image macro with a Top 10 Anime parody reading "Top 10 Conspiracy Theories That Turned Out to Be True," gaining over 31,000 points (shown below).

On January 17th, 2017, Imgur user FulIyAutomatedLuxuryGaySpaceCommunism^[2] uploaded the image by itself with the caption "When those chickens are up to something" (shown below, left). On February 28th, a Redditor uploaded a What In Tarnation edit to /r/dankmemes, gaining 384 points (shown below, right).

By the following year, the image became a reaction image paired with various captions. For example, on March 25th, 2018, a joke about Logan Paul posted to /r/dankmemes gained 35,000 points (shown below, left). A joke about Germany posted to Facebook page The Salty Soldier gained over 3,600 reactions (shown below, right).
