About

This Would Catch a Lot of You / Mouse Trap, also known as This Would Catch Me, is a meme trend in which creators add an item to a mouse trap that would theoretically catch them if they were a mouse. The meme, which uses the catchphrases "this would catch a lot of you" or "this would catch me," trended on Twitter in mid-2023, spreading to other social media platforms via reposts. Most of the memes used an exploitable product image of a mouse trap made by the company Victor.

Origin

On July 3rd, 2023, Twitter[1] user @friedurethra tweeted an image of a mouse trap with a hot dog where the cheese would go, captioning it, "this would catch me." Over the course of one week, the tweet received roughly 13,100 likes (shown below).

Spread

On July 4th, 2023, Twitter[2] user @moistoes tweeted a variant of the format, instead showing a McDonald's hash brown with the caption, "this would catch a lot of you." The tweet received roughly 29,500 likes in six days (shown below, left). Later on July 4th, Twitter[3] user @SoulSurVGC inserted a rocky helmet from Pokémon into the template, gaining roughly 1,100 likes in six days (shown below, right).

The format gained more iterations going into July 2023, gaining more virality over time. For instance, on July 6th, 2023, Twitter[4] user @raspberhrriies tweeted a version with a Snoopy plushie, earning roughly 19,800 likes in four days (shown below).

The trend spread via reposts and original iterations on Instagram[5][6] as well.
