This Took a Sudden Turn for the Awesome refers to a memorable quote from Japanese manga and anime series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure said by character Guido Mista. Online, the still image captioned with the quote has been used as a macro and reaction, usually in reference to unexpected positive changes.

Origin

On November 2nd, 2018, episode five "Find Polpo's Fortune!" of anime series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure premiered in Japan.^[1] In one scene of the episode, character Bruno Bucciarati reveals to the main group of characters that they are on a hunt for hidden treasure, with character Guido Mista reacting to the news with an interior monologue.

Seriously? This took a sudden turn for the awesome.

Spread

On November 3rd, 2018, Reddit user Based_Peppa_Pig posted the image macro based on the scene to /r/ShitpostCrusaders with the post gaining over 690 likes in six months (shown below).^[2]

In the following days, the macro gained a moderate presence in memes posted to the subreddit. For example, on November 4th, an unknown Redditor posted a meme which accumulated over 300 upvotes in six months (shown below, left).^[3] Redditor JesusKris625 made a post which gained over 1,100 upvotes in the same period (shown below, right).^[4]

In the following months, the image gained further spread on Reddit, with notable examples of the meme posted in /r/ShitpostCrusaders, /r/Animemes and other subreddits. Additionally, in some variations, the macro was combined with the macro of the Mista saying "This Really Sucks" in a similar manner to Drakeposting format.^[5]
