The GIF stars with a countdown of 100 kilometers, with the number rapidly going down to zero, with a jumpscare sometimes edited in at the end. Spawned by a TikTok posted in February 2022, the format saw frequent use on Discord and on social media.
Origin
On February 11th, 2022, TikTok[1] user @steve_grasoso posted a video of Paw Patrol dog character Zuma alongside a countdown reading, "this person is 100 km near your house," with the number rapidly going down from 100 to 0. The video goes dark and a flashlight effect appears, ending with a loud door knock. The upload (shown below) accumulated over 1.5 million views and 184,000 likes in three years.
Spread
In the following weeks, the video saw spread online as it was reposted on other sites, including reposts on iFunny[2] and YouTube,[3] and was uploaded as an edited GIF on Tenor.[4]
On February 19th, Instagram[5] user @pampam.v.1.2 (post no longer available) and TikTok[6] user romgo_fm posted the earliest found derivative memes based on the video. A February 24th, 2022 YouTube[7] reupload of @pampam.v.1.2's meme, a Kanye's blank stare edit, received over 30,000 views in three years (shown below).
On February 22nd, 2022, X[8] account @KFC_ES posted a version featuring a Momo version of Colonel Sanders which received over 1,900 reposts and 19,000 likes in three years (shown below).
In the following years, the format maintained an active presence in the form of both videos and GIFs, with users editing in various people and characters.
