This Onion Won't Make Me Cry is an exploitable comic series featuring a talking onion who says various hurtful comments to a person preparing to slice it in half.

Origin

On May 30th, 2010, the webcomic Drawing Board[1] published a comic titled "Onions" in which a stick figure proclaims "I'm not going to cry" when preparing to slice an onion. While cutting the vegetable, it begins saying various hurtful comments, leading the stick figure to cry (shown below).

On February 11th, 2011, a similar MS Paint-style comic was submitted to /r/pics,[2] where it garnered upwards of 350 points (84% upvoted) and 20 comments prior to being archived (shown below).

Spread

On December 15th, 2015, Redditor AngelFlash uploaded an edited version of the comic in which the onion says "Anime girls aren't real, you idiot." Prior to being archived, the post gathered more than 1,600 points (97% upvoted) and 40 comments on /r/anime_irl.[4]

On May 30th, 2016, Redditor Mjone77 submitted a communist-themed version of the comic to /r/me_irl,[3] where it gathered upwards of 6,100 points (88% upvoted) and 60 comments prior to being archived (shown below, left). On November 22nd, 2017, Redditor HugeAssNerd posted an edit in which the onion says "Net Neutrality is in danger again" to /r/dankmemes[5] (shown below, right).
