This Is Such a Haunting Photo refers to a frequently parodied tweet about a photograph of British Prime Minister Theresa May resigning from the position. The phrase has been used for various other photographs, mocking the initial tweet and implied sympathy for May.
Origin
On May 24th, 2019, Twitter[1] user @EylonALevy tweeted a photograph of May crying with the caption, "This is such a haunting photo. Whatever you think about Theresa May's record as prime minister, it's impossible not to feel sorry for her as a person." Within four days, the tweet received more than 1,600 retweets, 13,000 likes and 13,000 comments (shown below).
Spread
Following the post, others on Twitter paired the caption with various other images of various other images. That day, Twitter[2] user posted an image of Thanos with the caption. The post received more than 10,000 retweets and 55,000 likes in four days (shown below, left).
Over the next few days, others shared similar images, adding the caption to images of other absurd photographs or images of fictional villains (examples below, center and right).
