This Is Something That Died Out Around 2021 is a 2019 cartoon by Dave Whamond in which a history museum visitor sees a comedian on display and comments that comedy was something that died out in 2021. In December 2020, the comic gained popularity as source material for edits.

Origin

On June 10th, 2019, cartoon[1] artist Dave Whamond posted a cartoon in which a man with two kids visits a history museum and observes a display titled "Comedy." The man proceeds to comment that "comedy is something that died out around 2021 because too many people were getting offended by it" (cartoon shown below).

The cartoon did not see use in edits until on December 22nd, 2020, Redditor[2] crayon-connoisseur02 reposted the image to /r/terriblefacebook memes where it received over 10,200 upvotes in two weeks. On December 23rd, 2020, Twitter[3] user @urinalshitter reposted the image and received over 16,700 retweets and 145,000 likes in the same period. On December 23rd, 2020, Redditor[4] /r/masonhil posted the first viral edit of the cartoon (shown below) to /r/ComedyNecrophilia subreddit, gaining nearly 18,000 upvotes in two weeks.

Spread

In the following days, more edits of the comic were posted on Twitter and on /r/ComedyNecrophilia. For example, on December 24th, 2020, Twitter[5] user @InvoxiPlayGames posted an edit that received over 470 retweets and 1,700 likes (shown below, left). On December 28th, Redditor[6] dankxenon posted a version that accumulated over 8,500 upvotes in one week (shown below, right).

In late December 2020 and early January 2021 more viral edits of the cartoon were posted on Twitter, Reddit and other online platforms.
