This Is MF DOOM refers to a series of parodies of rapper MF DOOM's music in which meme creators spliced the audio of a video (usually of a person or character ranting or rhyming) with an MF DOOM instrumental, ultimately resembling the flow and style of MF DOOM's songs. Sometimes, creators used AI Voice as well. The memes also exploited the Spotify playlist for MF DOOM's music called "This Is MF DOOM," placing the text above the chosen video that they'd inserted. The meme became prevalent on YouTube and TikTok, among other video platforms, in mid-2023. The original iteration of the meme used a viral video about Slender Man "cooking hot dogs on the stove" and the instrumental for MF DOOM's song "One Beer."

Origin

On April 24th, 2023, TikToker^[1] @j4_408 posted a video that had "This Is MF DOOM" in a top caption, taken from the Spotify^[2] playlist for the late rapper. The video had the instrumental for MF DOOM's song "One Beer"^[3] playing, spliced with a viral video of Slender Man cooking hot dogs in the kitchen, originally made by YouTuber^[4] BUTCHY KID VIDEOS on November 24th, 2012. TikToker^[1] @j4_408's video gained roughly 697,600 plays and 167,600 likes in two months (shown below). It is currently the first-known iteration of the meme.

Spread

After TikToker^[1] @j4_408's viral video, variations of the trend soon surfaced. For instance, the first-known variant was posted by TikToker^[5] @rapidbeta on April 30th, 2023, using a different Slender Man video from YouTuber BUTCHY KID VIDEOS and a different MF DOOM instrumental, gaining roughly 30,000 plays and 2,300 likes two months (shown below).

On May 3rd, 2023, YouTuber^[6] awsomedude 2e7r38productions reposted TikToker^[1] @j4_408's video, gaining roughly 24,600 views in one month. On May 7th, 2023, YouTuber^[7] Sketchicality posted a version that put the audio through an AI-generated MF DOOM voice, gaining roughly 581,200 views and 63,000 likes in one month (shown below).

On May 30th, 2023, Twitter ^[8] user @beggarsbazooka_ tweeted "guys i discovered something amazing," captioning a video that transitioned from MF DOOM's "One Beer"^[3] instrumental to the Team Fortress 2 "Number 8 is great" meme from the "CommFT's Top10 plays of TF2 – December '09" YouTube^[9] video, gaining roughly 29,700 likes in 13 days. Then, later on May 30th, Twitter^[10] user @heavyfortres inserted the audio to the "This Is MF DOOM" format, gaining roughly 4,800 likes in the same timeframe (shown below).

The aforementioned TF2 video achieved more virality when it was reposted to both YouTube^[11] and TikTok^[12] in early June 2023. More versions of the meme surfaced on YouTube^[13] and TikTok^[14] thereafter.
