This And A Blunt refers to a catchphrase and series of reaction images that revolve around posting pictures of various things that people want to accompany a blunt. Typically, these appear as a reaction image with the caption “this and a blunt,” often including different settings, locations or moods. The theme was primarily seen on Twitter but spread to other social media platforms throughout June 2020.

Origin

The first example to use the theme surfaced online around March 2020, but the exact first is unknown. One of the earliest versions (shown below) was posted on March 15th, 2020, by Twitter^[1] user enzoriverss. The video received over 333,000 views, 7,700 likes and 1,400 retweets.

Spread

The theme continued to spread to other social media platforms in the following weeks and months. On March 15th, 2020, Redditor^[2] saint_b posted a variant to the r/Xenoblade_Chronicles subreddit, depicting the “Hot Springs Cutscene” from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The post (seen below) was also uploaded to Imgur,^[3] where it received nearly 500 views.

On March 22nd, 2020, Twitter^[4] user tippitytoptweet posted another example to their feed showing a Sega Genesis, which received 376 likes. On April 5th, 2020, Twitter^[5] user fairietay tweeted an image of Ryuk from Death Note sitting next to someone on a ledge (shown below), receiving over 146,000 likes and 41,000 retweets.

The Facebook^[6] page That shit hurted also posted an example of the meme on June 10th, 2020, receiving nearly 450 shares, 390 likes and 80 comments. On June 17th, 2020, the Instagram^[7] account highthcsociety uploaded a video variant with the caption “me and the loml” and received over 10,000 views and 1,700 likes (seen below).

On June 15th, 2020, eBaum's World ^[8] published an article titled "The 'This and a Blunt' Meme Explained," featuring a collection of various examples of the catchphrase and meme being used around the web, receiving nearly 31,000 views.
