Things That Disappear When You Need Them is an exploitable image macro series which features pictures of various commonly misplaced objects followed by a custom joke image.

Origin

On April 11th, 2016, Twitter user @IHCDASM[4] posted pictures of a set of keys, a wallet, a remote control and the phrase "My will to live" along with the caption "I keep losing these things" (shown below). Over the next 14 months, the tweet gained over 160 likes and 200 retweets.

Spread

Later that month, the tweet was reposted to FunnyJunk[2] by user joshlol and to /r/me_irl[1] by Redditor marca09. On October 18th, 2016, the Smile Facebook[5] page posted an image macro featuring a picture of a remote control, a wallet, a pair of glasses and a set of keys with the caption "Things That Magically Disappear" (shown below).

On August 18th, 2016, the "I keep losing these things" image was accepted as a template on ShitpostBot 5000.[3] On May 5th, 2017, the ToonHub Facebook[6] page posted an image macro featuring an iPhone, a set of keys, a wallet and Avatar Aang from the anime Avatar: The Last Airbender along with the caption "Four things that disappear when you need them" (shown below, left). On June 1st, a similar image was submitted to the /r/TheLastAirbender[7] subreddit, where it gathered upwards of 12,200 points (91% upvoted) and 90 comments within 24 hours. That day, Redditor beywiz reposted the image to /r/MemeEconomy,[8] asking if "Avatar memes" were a "steady investment".
